Ballards were wrapped as beach balls at the front of store based on real product.

Event Context & Objective

Target reimagined summer as more than a seasonal reset. The opportunity was to transform stores into destinations that sparked joy, encouraged exploration, and invited guests to linger. Beach Bungalow was created to place guests into a vacation-state-of-mind the moment they walked through the doors, turning everyday shopping into a mini escape.

The objective was to design a signature summer event that felt immersive and special, while remaining scalable across a national footprint. The experience needed to drive discovery across swim, food and beverage, and beauty, while reinforcing Target’s role as the destination for affordable summer joy.

Big Idea

A beach town, built to scale.

Beach Bungalow translated the feeling of a summer getaway into a connected system of moments layered throughout the store. Rather than relying on a single activation, the experience unfolded as a series of familiar beach-town touchpoints, each contributing to a shared vacation-state-of-mind.

By designing the experience as a system, Beach Bungalow could flex across store formats, delivering elevated moments at flagship locations while remaining cohesive, accessible, and repeatable at scale.

Guests could choose swim suits and towels to embroider from the Swim & Sand gateway and take a selfie with Bullseye and our summer tubs.

Experience Strategy

The experience was designed as a guided journey that layered naturally into the existing shopping flow. Guests encountered moments of delight where they already were, rather than being pulled out of their path. Visual cues, materials, and messaging worked together to create a cohesive narrative that unfolded as guests moved through the store.

Each moment served a distinct role — from welcoming and energizing, to educating and rewarding — while reinforcing a unified summer expression across categories.

Key Moments

  • Front-of-Store Welcome
A high-impact entry moment that signaled something special was happening, using bold summer graphics, beach-inspired decor, and event signage to draw guests in.

  • Interactive Giveaways & Personalization
Guests received playful, summer-ready takeaways, with select locations offering customization that added a personal, memorable touch.

  • Food & Beverage Moments
Summer snacks and sips brought to life through sampling and recipe inspiration, encouraging easy basket add-ons and at-home recreation.

  • Beauty Discovery
Approachable suncare education helped guests find the right products for their summer activities through guided, human interactions.

  • Photo-Ready Moments
Designed for sharing, these moments invited guests to pause, capture the experience, and extend the story beyond the store.

Impact

Beach Bungalow transformed stores into mini vacation destinations, encouraging guests to browse longer, discover more, and connect emotionally with the brand. The experience reinforced Target’s summer positioning through immersive storytelling, human interaction, and thoughtful design at scale.

The work earned national attention, including coverage highlighting Target’s approach to immersive summer spaces, and demonstrated how experiential retail can drive joy, discovery, and loyalty across hundreds of stores.

Inspired by summers spent by floating down the stream or chilling in the pool on a tub, we designed a photo opportunity where the colorful tubs, based in product, were the backdrop for selfies.

These BA outfits elevated the summer experience by pairing crisp silhouettes with sun-washed stripes, signaling style, freshness, and care the moment guests entered the space. The polished yet approachable look reinforced a premium, seasonal mood while helping team members feel like confident hosts, not just staff. All items are shoppable at Target.
